The days between the Ascension of Jesus and the coming of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost invite the disciples -and us- to think about our changing relationship with God. How do we breathe out our losses and make room for the life-giving Spirit that will blow us in new directions?
Jesus calls the Holy Spirit as the “Advocate”, essentially a defense attorney. God is not your judge or prosecutor. God is on your side.
In Christ God prepares a place for us in this life, this world, this moment. We are given this ministry of divine, extravagant hospitality to make a place of belonging for all people in the world– beginning in our church.
The Spirit invites us to still our hearts and listen so we can recognize the shepherd’s voice– and then to follow.
Jesus walked with the disciples on the road to Emmaus, but they didn’t know it was him. Isn’t that how it always is?
There is a little bit of Thomas is each of us, reaching out for Jesus, wanting to touch him. Don’t think of it as doubt. It’s faith. Go ahead and reach. Stretch out your hands.
Resurrection is not God’s instant magic trick. It’s transformation-m sometimes very gradual. All our sorrows, all our struggles all our losses are being transformed. And so are we.
The story of Jesus’ death is not about a scheme for God to be able to forgive us. It’s about how faithful God is to us even when we’re awful to each other and to God.
