It is human nature to look back at our past when we are anxious. Like, the Israelites, we make idols of the Church we remember – and sometimes, we “weep and gnash” our teeth that things have changed. But God invites us to resist the pull of “idols” and focus on the the Church in this place and time.
The ten Commandments are not laws we have to follow or be punished. They’re a description of what it looks like to live in Covenant with God– like marriage vows.
God never leaves anybody out. Our ministry is to include those whom society has excluded. That work starts within, as we acknowledge and overcome our own exclusions.
Faith is a life-long process of learning to let go and trust God to love us, accompany us, care for us and provide for us, regardless of our sense of “deserving.” Trust that God wants you to thrive.
To forgive we begin by forgiving ourselves, allowing ourselves to be hurt. In Christ’s love we receive the hurt without needing to pass it on. This is the love that changes the world.
As followers of Jesus we’re students: continually learning and growing. What we’re learning is not information but a way of living, and the only way to learn it is in community. Christ’s living presence leads us, in our relationships.
Bearing the cross doesn’t mean being miserable; it means being willing to suffer for the sake of love and justice. Being born of love, it makes us joyful, not miserable, and it joins us with Jesus.
The Scripture lessons this week reminds us of the importance of identity in following Jesus. Together as the body of Christ, we not only discern who Jesus is, but who we are being shaped to be through attending the “training camp” of the Church.
