GREETING
PRELUDE

[As we listen to the music we quiet our minds and bodies,
listen for our hearts’ deepest desires,
and become present to the Holy One who is lovingly present for us.
]

* CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader:  God of love, you create us in your image and call us in your grace.
All:    We are your Beloved, special in your eyes and chosen for great tasks.
Christ, you come to us in lowly form.  You heal us and lift us up and give us our lives.
We are your companions: nothing special, but blessed by your love.
Holy Spirit, you live in us and move us by your will.
We are your earthen vessels, holy in our ordinary lives, powerful in your hands.
Speak to us, lead us, and use us according to your delight.  Amen.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Pastor:   The grace of God is with you.
Congregation: And also with you.
Trusting in God’s tender mercy, let us confess our sin to God with one another.
God of love, help us to see ourselves with the eyes of love,
to see all that is in us that is loving,
and all that is not loving.
By the grace you show us in Christ,
forgive us, heal us, and perfect your love in us.
SILENT PRAYER  …    THE WORD OF GRACE
RESPONSE   Bless the Lord    Black hymnal  #2013

PRAYER OF THE DAY
God of love, you speak softly in our hearts.  You call us into this world with your love.  Speak to us now; awaken us with your grace, shape us by your Word, and lead us into lives of compassion, courage and beauty.  Amen.

OLD TESTAMENT     Jeremiah 18.1-11
[ God says, “You are the clay and I am the potter. I reshape you as I see fit.” ]

God told Jeremiah, “Up on your feet! Go to the potter’s house. When you get there, I’ll tell you what I have to say.”  So I went to the potter’s house, and sure enough, the potter was there, working away at the potting wheel. Whenever the pot the potter was working on turned out badly, as sometimes happens when you are working with clay, the potter would simply start over and use the same clay to make another pot. Then God’s Message came to me:  “Can’t I do just as this potter does, people of Israel?” God’s Decree! “Watch this potter. In the same way that this potter works the clay, I work on you, people of Israel. At any moment I may decide to pull up a people or a country by the roots and get rid of them.  But if they repent of their wicked lives, I will think twice and start over with them.  At another time I might decide to plant a people or country, but if they don’t cooperate and won’t listen to me, I will think again and give up on the plans I had for them.

PSALTER      Psalm 37.1-11
[“Commit to God, who will act.  Listen patiently for God.” ]

 Do not fret because of the wicked;
do not be envious of wrongdoers,
for they will soon fade like the grass,
and wither like the green herb.
Trust in the Lord, and do good;
so you will live in the land, and enjoy security.
Take delight in the Lord,
and God will give you the desires of your heart.
Commit your way to the Lord;
trust in God, and God will act.
God will make your vindication shine like the light,
and the justice of your cause like the noonday.
Be still before the Lord, and wait patiently for God;
do not fret over those who prosper in their way,
over those who carry out evil devices.
Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath.
Do not fret—it leads only to evil.
For the wicked shall be cut off,
but those who wait for the Lord shall inherit the land.
Yet a little while, and the wicked will be no more;
though you look diligently for their place, they will not be there.
But the meek shall inherit the land,
and delight themselves in abundant prosperity.

NEW TESTAMENT      Hebrews 13.1-6
[Show radical hospitality, care for those in prison, exercise fidelity in relationships and be free of the love of money. We trust confidently: “God is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can anyone do to me?”]

Stay on good terms with each other, held together by love.  Be ready with a meal or a bed when it’s needed. Why, some have extended hospitality to angels without ever knowing it! Regard prisoners as if you were in prison with them. Look on victims of abuse as if what happened to them had happened to you. Honor marriage, and guard the sacredness of sexual intimacy between wife and husband. God draws a firm line against casual and illicit sex. Don’t be obsessed with getting more material things. Be relaxed with what you have. Since God assured us, “I’ll never let you down, never walk off and leave you,” we can boldly say, “God is there, ready to help; I’m fearless no matter what. Who or what can get to me?”

GOSPEL      Luke 14.1, 7-14
[Jesus is at a dinner.  He teaches the people to seek the humblest seat, and also to offer banquets to those who cannot repay the favor. ]

One time when Jesus went for a Sabbath meal with one of the top leaders of the Pharisees, all the guests had their eyes on him, watching his every move. Noticing how each had tried to elbow into the place of honor, he said, “When someone invites you to dinner, don’t take the place of honor. Somebody more important than you might have been invited by the host. Then they’ll come and call out in front of everybody, ‘You’re in the wrong place. The place of honor belongs to this other one.’ Red-faced, you’ll have to make your way to the very last table, the only place left.  When you’re invited to dinner, go and sit at the last place. Then when the host comes they may very well say, ‘Friend, come up to the front.’ That will give the dinner guests something to talk about!

What I’m saying is, If you walk around with your nose in the air, you’re going to end up flat on your face. But if you’re content to be simply yourself, you will become more than yourself.” Then he turned to the host. “The next time you put on a dinner, don’t just invite your friends and family and rich neighbors, the kind of people who will return the favor. Invite some people who never get invited out, the misfits from the wrong side of the tracks. You’ll be – and experience – a blessing. They won’t be able to return the favor, but the favor will be returned – oh, how it will be returned! – at the resurrection of God’s people.”

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
[Anyone who wishes may share a prayer concern at the microphone.]

THE PRAYER OF JESUS
Our Mother,  Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
