“Shawls…made for centuries, universal and embracing, symbolic of an inclusive, unconditionally loving God. They wrap, enfold, comfort, cover, give solace, mother, hug, shelter and beautify. Those who have received these shawls have been uplifted and affirmed, as if given wings to fly above their troubles…” – Janet Bristow, 1998
Prayer shawls are not for sale, they may only be given with love and prayers. This is an outreach ministry that is meant to encourage, comfort, and even celebrate with those around us within our church community, our families and our greater communities.
We are continuing with our prayer shawl ministry at St. Matthew’s, but currently, there are no finished shawls or baby prayer blankets available—they are all in progress! Prayer shawls are made prayerfully over long periods of time due to the care that goes into the handwork. We do currently have prayer squares available to be given as needed. They are smaller (about 4-5″ square) with either a heart or cross knitted into the design and are enjoyed since they can be tucked into a pocket or purse, or under a pillow.
If you know of someone who may benefit from this ministry, please contact Diana Kendrick or the church office with your request. If you knit or crochet and are interested in our ministry, please let us know. We would love to have you join us.
